If we think about the character of a cat, surely the fact of belonging to the male or female sex is not the only factor that determines the character of the animal, nor the most decisive.
Different elements contribute to the formation of the cat’s personality (as in that of any other animal, including human beings) which are nothing more than the sum of biological and environmental factors. Among these we find sex but also age , race , and above all previous experiences , especially those lived in the first months of life.
Therefore we do not have to rely entirely on the sex of the animal to determine its character. In these cases in fact there are no fixed rules and each animal has its own story .
The most beautiful way to adopt an animal is to not pay attention to differences in gender, breed, age or other, but to let oneself be carried away by one’s feelings and want to give and receive love.
However, it is important to know and know in advance the sex to which our cat belongs, to safeguard its health. In fact, male and female cats have a different biological basis, which leads them to run into different health problems during the course of one’s life, and consequently need specific checks .
HEALTH DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE CAT
As we have said, male and female cats are prone to different diseases and health problems, and therefore need different attention.
For both, however, the best way to guarantee them the highest level of health possible and at the same time make them live a more serene and peaceful existence is to sterilize them.. In fact, many of their restlessness and behavioral and health problems are closely linked to hormonal factors.
Then going into detail, a cat that has not been spayed will have an extremely high chance of having tumors breasts, ovaries and uterus compared to a sterilized cat. The same goes for the cat: if not sterilized it will also be more subject to tumors as well as to problems of the urinary tract and kidneys.
THE MALE CAT: NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS
As explained above, the character and behavior of cats is determined by several factors, but it is undeniable that it is very much linked to the hormonal factor.. Therefore, to understand some basic characteristics of the animal, it is necessary to distinguish between neutered and non-neutered cat.
The uncastrated cat will basically always be at the mercy of its own instincts and the continuous need to reproduce. This leads the cat to engage in certain behaviors such as:
- More independent and lively character
- Refusal and impatience in being closed in the house
- Spray various areas of the house and surroundings with urine to mark the territory
- Run away from home and roam even long distances in search of females in heat
- Engage in heated and dangerous fights with other male cats, for the supremacy of the territory and of the female subjects
The neutered cat , on the other hand, will be much less restless, more peacefulor and most of the behaviors that occurred in full hormonal storm will disappear or be significantly reduced. Occasionally it can mark the territory, but more rarely. The fights with other male cats, if there will be, will take place more for fun than for supremacy (if these too have been neutered in turn).
So here’s what we can expect from a neutered kitten:
- Less anxious and irritable, more gentle and affectionate with their humans
- He will get along very well and will love cuddling with other cats , both male (as long as they are neutered) and female.
- He will not run away from home but will find himself much more at ease in the home environment
THE FEMALE CAT: NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS
As for the males, so also for the female cats the substantial difference in character and behavior will be dictated by the fact of being sterilized or not.
An unsterilized cat , in fact, will also tend to be prey to her own hormones, albeit in a very different way from the cat. When it periodically goes into heat (spring and summer), it will assume certain and typical behaviors:
- She becomes very affectionate, in need of pampering and attention , often purring , rubbing and rolling in front of us to request caresses and affection.
- It emits very strong vocalizations .
- They can become aggressive if they cannot respond to their instincts
- They become much more territorial and mark their territory with urine (although much less than males).
- They do not tolerate the proximity of other females in the areas considered to be part of their territory and for this reason they sometimes find themselves fighting with them to remove them.
- They do not tolerate changes , especially within the home environment.
As for males, it is therefore always advisable to sterilize your cat, both to avoid unnecessary stress and to safeguard her health.
A spayed cat , therefore, will tend to abandon more territorial behaviors and will behave differently:
- She will be less hungry for cuddles, but equally affectionate with her humans
- He will make friends and can create a good relationship with another cat in the house, but more easily if he is male.
- However, she will maintain her maternal instinct in the care and defense of puppies, even if not her own, should the opportunity arise.
- He will be more wary and less sociable with strangers – whether it be humans or other animals.
- It will tend to be more solitary and self-sufficient than the neutered male.
We can therefore conclude that both males and females, once sterilized, will be excellent members of the family , whose affection and sweetness you can appreciate.
