La storia del pastore tedesco, il cane dai mille talenti

The story of the German Shepherd, the dog with a thousand talents

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular and recognizable dog breeds worldwide, kept both as a companion dog and a working animal.
It is no coincidence that it often accompanies humans across a wide range of contexts, thanks to the distinct physical and personality traits that set it apart.

But… what are its origins?

The breed originated in Germany at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the efforts of Max von Stephanitz, a former officer of the German army.
Stephanitz was determined to create a breed of working dogs that could be used per a wide range of tasks, like the guard, protection, the police, and pastoral livestock herding.
To achieve this goal, he carefully selected dogs from different regions of Germany and crossbred them to produce a new type of dog.

The first The officially registered German Shepherd was named Horand von Grafrath, which was registered in 1899. From that point, the breed quickly gained popularity in Germany and later across the world.

Horand alone generated the beauty of…one hundred and fifty children! Von Stephanitz was in fact obsessed with the pursuit of perfection, which led him to practice intensive breeding, pairing Horand and his offspring with sisters, daughters, and close direct relatives.
In this way the positive traits were passed down, but they also began to emerge dangerous hereditary diseases.

During the First World War, German Shepherds were used in large numbers as war dogs and they have proven to be very effective at delivering messages, detecting landmines, and locating wounded personnel on the battlefield.

Over the years, the German Shepherd has also been used in a wide range of other tasks, like a dog guide for the visually impaired, search and rescue dog, Drug detection dog and therapy dog. The breed has proven to be very versatile and adapts well to a wide range of different roles and environments.

The popularity of the German Shepherd has also extended to the world of cinema, among the most famous ones that have appeared on television, we remember Rin Tin Tin, Rex, or Sam from the film “I Am Legend”.

Body build

The German Shepherd is a medium-to-large sized dog, with a muscular and robust build. The shoulders are sloped and the hips are broad, giving the dog a sleek and powerful look. The legs are straight and strong, with well-developed muscles to support the body's weight during running and physical activity. The ears are upright and triangular, the muzzle is long and sturdy, with a powerful jaw. The coat is thick and durable, with long, straight fur in black, gray, or brown.
Overall, the German Shepherd is a dog of great beauty and strength, ideal for many physical activities and sports.

Character and Care

The German Shepherd is known for its balanced and loyal character. This is a very intelligent and attentive dog that forms a close bond with its owner and family. It is very protective towards its loved ones, and it can make an excellent guard dog.
However, it is important to socialize them from puppyhood to prevent any aggressive behavior toward strangers or other animals. The German Shepherd is also known for its great energy and stamina, and requires plenty of physical and mental activity to prevent behavioral problems.

In short, the German Shepherd is a loyal, intelligent and protective dog, well suited for anyone looking for a faithful, active companion. To care for a German Shepherd, it is important to provide them with a balanced diet and is suitable for their nutritional needs.
Additionally, they need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. Grooming their coat is just as important, with regular brushing and baths to keep their fur clean and in good condition.
