Have you noticed that your cat drinks little and are you worried?
Let’s find out together why our felines are used to drinking little, how much water they need to consume, and how we can encourage them to drink more.
Not drinking enough can be harmful to the cat’s health — even though by nature they are used to drinking little because they originate from arid areas, adult felines can develop kidney problems. That’s why it’s our responsibility to make sure they always consume the right amount of water.
But how much water should a cat drink daily?
The amount varies based on weight, activity level, and diet. On average, a cat weighing around 5 kg needs 200-250 ml of water per day, which they can get from drinking or from eating wet food.
A cat that mostly eats dry food will tend to take in less water passively, whereas a cat that eats wet food will go to the water bowl less often and be healthier. Our advice is to only choose natural, high-quality wet food, like our Life Cat line
How to encourage your cat to drink?
We’ve gathered the best methods and tips to ensure and encourage our domestic felines to drink more:
- Keep the water bowl clean
- Always pour fresh water
- Try moving the bowl to different spots around the house; choose quiet areas away from foot traffic and the litter box
- If the above doesn’t fix the issue, try filling multiple bowls and placing them in various areas, then see which one they prefer
- Try using bowls made of different materials and sizes
- Some cats like running water, so you could try buying a cat water fountain.
- Opt for a healthy diet with natural wet foods, like our Life Cat Natural line
It’s very important that your cat stays hydrated to prevent illnesses and kidney dysfunction. Put our tips into action to encourage them to drink more, and in any case, we recommend consulting your trusted nutritionist veterinarian.
