The weight of our puppies throughout their lives is inevitably subject to variations that may depend on their breed, age, or other factors.
It could become a problem when we notice that weight loss starts to become noticeable and especially accelerated.
The causes could be many and varied, so the first step to take is to immediately visit the veterinarian.
Let’s look at the most common problems that can cause weight loss.
1 – Gastrointestinal problems
Weight loss is one of the first symptoms of a possible gastrointestinal issue that can affect the stomach and intestines.
We need to stay attentive when our dog eats: they may have digestive problems that make them eat less, and consequently, lose weight.
2 – Diabetes
Diabetes is a very common condition among dogs that can cause significant weight loss over a very short period.
The main symptoms of diabetes, in addition to weight loss, are: increased hunger and thirst, and increased urination in dogs.
The main concern with diabetes is the constant presence of sugar in the blood, even when fasting, when levels should be very low.
3 – Megaesophagus
This condition can affect a dog’s esophagus.
The esophagus tends to enlarge and as a result can no longer properly carry food to the stomach.
Weight loss is one of the symptoms that should trigger an alert; other symptoms include regurgitation, bad breath, and hypersalivation.
4 – Chronic kidney failure
This very serious condition occurs when a dog’s kidneys can no longer perform their excretory and metabolic functions.
On average, this condition is diagnosed in senior dogs that are over six years old, and other symptoms may be noticeable such as vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness.
As we have seen, weight loss in dogs can be a sign of many different conditions, both serious and less so.
For this reason, we advise you to always pay attention to your puppies’ diet and weight, and most importantly, consult a veterinarian as soon as you notice anything out of the ordinary.
